Auto DIY Tips- Body and Paint – (How To Use Body Filler) *BONDO*

CollisionBlast.com – Body and Paint tips – (How To Use Body Filler) – In this DIY How-to video I am doing a collision repair demonstration of (how to apply body filler) to a small repair area or dent. Many people wonder what the difference is between body filler and bondo are. However, there is no difference. Bondo is just a brand. Body filler just became the jargon of body shop talk in the industry as bondo. After attending WyoTech in the late 80′s and years of experience as a technician, manager, estimator, and educator, I would like to share more about collision repair training and auto paint training with you. http Watch my how-to video, a href=”www.wonderhowto.com to apply body filler for car repair work on WonderHowTo.

    @budzag I would go ahead and sand them out. If you hit bare plastic, remember to spray plastic adhesion promoter before applying primer. At the store you buy your products from, ask them about it. Every paint brand is a little different.

    @invisible634 I am glad you find these videos useful. I also agree, it is good to refresh often, as we all learn more. Learning never stops…Thanks for watching!

    you know, I watched your video a while back, then actually took some classes in college which went smoothly for me, thanks. It sure is nice to reflect back on a video to catch the little details that may be overlooked. For example, multi coat application is far better than one thick coat. I learned the hard way as I was put on a “Bondo” job. Tried to say filler they were like we only use bondo and walked away. They had evercoat. go figure.

    @wyatt3flip I would try to get it within 1/4 of an inch. However, if you can’t, you don’t want to overwork the metal. You may consider applying the first coat with fiberglass filler that comes in a can.

    what should i do if my dent is deeper than a quarter of an inch?

    @MrZdvy Body filler is designed to be applied on bare steel. I have seen what you are talking about too. This is probably due to the filler being too thick, the metal started rusting before the filler was applied, or improperly mixed filler. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have other questions.

    Why would you apply filler directly to bare metal? I always thought the metal underneath the filler is going to rust causing the filler to crack and ruin the paint.
    I’ve seen a lot of older repairs on cars that had cracked filler/paint so something went wrong.

    @alpinelover7170 No, you do not want to apply etch primer before the filler. You can apply body filler straight to the bare metal. The only primer that body filler can be applied over is epoxy primer. I have always just applied it to bare metal.

    before applying the bondo would you put like a etching primer over the bare metal so it dosnt rust overtime under the bondo?

    @eric31291 I would not use body filler on plastic. I would use plastic repair adhesive or a flexible parts putty for a scratch. If the scratch is down to raw plastic, it may need a thin coat of adhesion promoter before applying the material. Thanks for watching.

    can body filler be used on plastics such as bumper lips – polyurathane? i have some pretty deepish scratches that need filler but it still has the paint on it, does the paint have to be removed to apply filler? Dont know how to get that paint out its on a bad curve and too much sanding will ruin the shape.

    @TheRickmurray

    No you can’t. Putting it over another paint will overlay across the paint causing corrosion and bubbling. So be sure to sand down and clean the surface before application. You can do it with paint on but in the long track it will show up.

    Was that just a sanded surface you put the filler over, can you put it directly onto paint?

  21. #21 by ButlerCollision on January 7, 2012 - 10:12 pm

    @jvisaplayer831 No, you apply body filler straight over body filler. The only thing you want to do is sand between coats. Be sure to sand the low areas as well to rough it up before applying another layer. Thanks for watching!

    when applying layers of body filler, do you apply epoxy primer or some sort of adhesion material prior to adding another layer of filler?
